Dialogue

My parents came to visit me, and we had some interesting conversations going on about the work I am currently working on. It made me recognize how important it is to have people who are informed about art to dialogue with. Through my father's trained eye and analysis and my mother's strong visceral intuition, some things they observed are that I am holding on to literally to the form. As I consequently agree, I need to bring forward the materiality of the paint and surface. I believe this is due to the stages I work my paintings in. I begin with a loose wash blocking in abstracted shapes. I then work the form with layers of pure paint where I bring forward a clear representation of the observed form, and then finally I blur the boundries between form and formlessness through color and surface texture.
