Line and Color

Does one's drawings have to formally relate to one' s paintings? The main element in my drawings is line, but the foundation of my paintings are color and shape. I guess this question relates to the historical and theoretical debate of color and line. It is a difficult issue to resolve in practice. How do I negotiate line while embracing an atmospheric and painterly surface?
